Grown ups like stuffed animals too! Especially when it’s actually their baby!

It’s not a pattern launch if something doesn’t go wrong, right? So the blog hiccupped and I wasn’t able to post on release day (until very late). But it’s back up and acting normal, so now I’m going to share a little freebie I wanted to have as a bonus companion pattern to go along with The Baby Dragon Crochet Costume.

Before we get to it, can we take a moment to appreciate how stinkin’ cute this lil’ guy is as a Dragon?

And you thought your baby was cute before you put them into a life-size amigurumi Dragon costume!

Above is a shot of him in the first costume I made for photos. This isn’t even his Halloween Costume this year, but I still made him one!!! I left his toes out on the second one because my little guy wants to walk so badly, and he just got mad when I put him in a costume with feet the other day. He doesn’t look mad up there, but it didn’t last long!

This little man was ready to fly off! Keeping him contained during photos was a chore. His siblings helped with, but not with lasting effects.

I wanted to make him a little trick or treat basket he could carry around and play with. Something not to big, but that he could stuff toys in or something. I love crocheting baskets, but I wanted this one to be themed for the costume and dragons and eggs go together, so….

Tiny and cute just like the baby who goes in the dragon costume. This basket is small enough for them to carry around and fill with candy or blocks, what ever the baby sees fit to fill it with!

I designed three different baskets before I landed on this one. I wanted it to actually look like an egg, and really struggled to get yarn held single to do this for me. I’ve been making baskets for years and always held two are three strands together to create a better fabric. Fun fact. I don’t own a dresser. I have green crochet baskets on shelves in my closet that house my clothes!

So after I quite fighting what I already knew the pattern came quite quickly!

What came first, the crocheter or the egg?

Supplies to collect before we begin!

6.5 mm K hook

1 skein of Worsted weight yarn (since we are holding the yarn together you can just pull from the center of the skein and from the outside. This makes it easier than separating out sections) I used Loops and Thread Impeccable from Michael’s in white. But really anything will do! I want someone to make a golden egg so I can gasp and squeal!

A pair of Scissors

A Dull pointed darning needle.

The Baby Dragon Crochet Halloween Costume that is cozy and warm for baby, and endless fun for mom and dad to cuddle!

Hello, my friends!

I wanted to pop on today and share a little bit about my pattern coming out next week! The Baby Dragon Costume. This project has been a long term passion for me, and I am so pleased, proud, and excited to be bringing it full circle and releasing this pattern!

The Baby Dragon Costume is a beautifully textured masterpiece. Sure to be a show stopper at any events, this costume will bring squeals of “Your baby is sooooo cute!”

A little history, and the story behind the Dragon.

I am the middle child in a family of 5 and I spent most of my time in middle school, high school, and even into my college years taking care of the younger two. They were quite a bit younger which meant they thought I was super cool and funny (Hello confidence booster!).

One of our favorite games to play in the summertime was that I was a baby water dragon who would chase them around the yard shouting “I’m the baby Dragon!” while attacking them with hose water.

And you thought your baby was cute before you put them into a life-size amigurumi Dragon costume!

Side note: Did you know you aren’t supposed to drink water from the hose anymore? Because (in my best old lady voice) back in MY day, we totally did that sort of thing.

Full Circle:

Fast forward quite a few years and I was having my son, whom we named Drake (which means Dragon in old English), and I was already thinking about his first Halloween costume. Gleefully, I trapesed off to Michael’s to find some yarn and I freaked when I found a gorgeous Kelly green. My maiden name is Greene, I’m Irish, AND Dragons are my favorite creatures! It was perfection!!!

This beautiful Crochet Dragon costume is perfect for keeping baby warm while trick-or-treating and is sure to bring squeals of delight from all! This costume is soft and comfortable for baby, and makes mom and dad feel like they are carrying aroud a giant stuffy!

I hadn’t ever designed crochet clothes but I had designed sewing patterns a few years before. I used that knowledge of deconstructing clothing into its pieces to learn how to assemble this. The whole time I was making it I kept thinking “Wouldn’t it be cool to sell these?” Two years later I did just that. And I’ve been spending my falls making these costumes since! I have made nearly 50 of them in the last 6 years. And I still sigh with deep contentment each time I begin.

This pattern was a culmination of so much of my heart and life. I will always cherish it as something special. Are we allowed to pick favorites? It’s definitely my favorite!!!

The softest and sweetest Dragon you will ever get to cuddle! This costume is perfectly comfortable for the baby and perfectly darling for everyone else!

Earlier this year I took the plunge and learned how to write crochet patterns. I had a fun idea for a sweet little toy so I took my first little jump into the world of crochet patterns. I knew The Baby Dragon was going to be close on its heels. This needs to be out in the world!

The costume is going live on Saturday the 17th of October! That’s less than one week, friends! The sizes on the initial pattern will be for newborn to 24 months with information on sizing adjustments! And I WILL be adding more sizes!!! This will be the first pattern I size up to adult sizes, so stay tuned for that if you want to make a costume for a bigger kid or for yourself! The possibilities are going to be ENDLESS!!!!

Book mark the blog, or come back on Saturday for a freebie make that goes hand it hand with the costume for halloween night!

Now that you know the history of my favorite animal, I want to know yours! Drop below and tell me your very favorite. Real or make-believe!

Its here, its here, its here!!! Look at this bright beauty!!! I am SO in love with this gorgeous toy! Like my last one, I cannot keep this away from my kids. They sneak into my craft room and run off with it ALL THE TIME. Trying to get pictures taken before it dissapeared into the depths of their rooms was a CHORE.

But I wouldn’t have it any other way! If I’m going to make something I want it to be well loved! I’m never happier then when my kiddos are excited about a new pattern. I’m so lucky to have such a support team. We would make big corporations jealous.

Lovecrafts recently asked how I express myself through craft. My answer is my kids and fibers. And when those two meet there is magic! I was struggling with the yarn choice for this toy and I ended up asking them what I should do (kind of in desperation). The first words out of my eldest boy’s mouth were “You should make it a kind of a rainbow”. I don’t know if this is what he envisioned when he said that, but he loved the outcome and is so proud to have contributed to the final product.

My daughter inspired the Not a Square toy

Combining the love of my children with the love of making has made such a difference in how I view life and work. I do what I love now. I’m not looking for anyone’s opinion but my own! And It feels special and amazing to bring my kids along with me

Both of my big kids have a toy pattern they helped me with. Now to see if the baby will do anything besides be adorable and model for me!
